I’ll start by saying HEAVY SPOILER WARNING AHEAD SO STOP HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT SPOILERS!!!
Now that we’ve sorted that our, Nick is going to be murdered by me for this one… I can’t believe he told me that this is the show I should watch next only for me to get eviscerated by the plot and ending. The show is such a good depiction of grief, death and loss that it hurt even more when Kaori doesn’t make it and the metaphor of Kousei playing the song and she shows up in his vision.
I think this show is at its best when you’re feeling like Kousei is only sinking deeper and deeper into depression while this girl who is clearly unwell is pushing him to be better and to live his best life. And then it gets even better when the show flips that on its head and Kaori starts getting worse and Kousei has to drag her back. I really have nothing bad to say about the way they depicted Kaori’s story line, my only complaint is give me some justice for my man Watari!
If I had to actually nitpick something about this show is that there was too much background character action going on. Stay with me on this one, but give me less piano time and more emotional roller coaster time. I do not care about the other two pianists, stop showing me their performances and instead make me emotionally distraught over these two high schoolers instead.
Now that the complaint about the piano is out of the way, let’s talk about the score for all the piano scenes because my god they cooked. These performances, while not what I want from a show like this, were genuinely magical. I’m not entirely sure what recordings they used for the performances for the show but whoever did it bravo.
All in all, a fantastic show but be emotionally ready, I did not cry but it was the closest I think a show has ever gotten me to crying. The lie in April being the crux of what makes this so sad, the realization that her lie was for her to get a chance to be with him even if it was just for a little bit… Again though just for Watari cause my man ain’t deserve all that shit.
Your Lie in April is genuinely a wonderful messy show and depicts the horrible truths of loss while showing the characters becoming who they are because of it. I cannot recommend this enough to people who are either hopeless romantics or just love a good romance story.
Verdict
★★★★
Probably the best depiction of grief and loss in any media. I really liked the characters and the plot was awesome and so moving it almost brought me to tears. My one complaint, and stay with me here, too much piano. I don’t need an episode for each of the side character’s performances, get me back in the emotional blender please lol.
