Ok, let’s talk about it. Thunderbolts* is an excellent movie.

*PLEASE BE AWARE THERE ARE SPOILERS HERE*

Anything with Winter Soldier in it is going to be a yes from me, and let me tell you, Marvel let my man cook. Bucky was the star of the show for me in terms of moving the plot forward and that was so delightful, however I was equally happy with Yelena’s role as the main character. As someone who didn’t love Black Widow when it came out, Yelena shed the negative feelings I had from that movie in this one.

The story is all about dealing with your own actions and depression and that hits home for a lot of people right now. I think Marvel got Sentry/Void/Bob nearly perfect in his portrayal and I loved the way he interacted with everyone. His interactions with Wyatt were amazing, I loved the way Yelena and him bonded, and watching the post credits scene where Alexei is teasing him is so fun.

Speaking of Alexei, that is such a return from him! He was, in my opinion, the best part of Black Widow, and while he gets out shined a bit in Thunderbolts*, he was hilarious and I loved his relationship with Yelena being put on show here. Alexei was the foil to all the seriousness of the other heroes that fit this movie perfectly.

The only character I was a bit disappointed by was Ghost. I feel like the writers did not give her a chance to breathe. She had one cool moment and it was when she killed Taskmaster right at the beginning for like no reason… Also the less said about Taskmaster the better, don’t want to incur the wrath of Taskmaster fans.

All in all, I really enjoyed the new crew that are going to likely kick off the next Avengers movie. This (along with Captain America 4 not being terrible) restored my faith in Marvel and I am hoping they can continue the momentum into the Fantastic Four movie coming out soon!

Verdict

★★★★1/2

A hilarious and action packed return to form for Marvel sees some of the best acting and plot writing from the studio in years. I went into Thunderbolts* excited but not expecting much and left pleasantly surprised! I would highly recommend seeing this one in theaters before its gone!
