The Owl House

Disney has given us some great works in terms of cartoon shows on TV, but since I’m not generally the primary target audience it’s not something I generally seek out. Luckily there are others like Michael who are aware of other happenings, and since he often recommended this show I decided to finally give it a shot. And I am so glad I did.

The Owl House revolves around Luz, a human girl with odd habits that eventually have her on the path to a camp to make children more normal. While waiting to go to camp she instead finds herself transported to another realm with demons and witches. There she meets Eda, a powerful witch, and King, a tiny demon who tries to be fierce but is usually more adorable. Together they have adventures as Luz tries to learn magic, with some surprisingly deep and relatable moments.

Along the way we meet all sorts of characters, many of which enjoy similar depth to our main character and her primary companions. This depth extends into the story, which really helps set the show apart. There is plenty of betrayal, dangerous situations (death is NOT off the table), and a big emphasis on family and the connections between people. It takes a little bit to ramp up but once things get going it’s pretty good pacing, with the final season perhaps being a little too short but making it work as best they can.

While there is certainly a darker element to this show than you might expect from something coming out of Disney, there is also a lot of comedy. Plenty of one-liners and other setups, plus just a fun cast. Hooty, the literal owl house, in particular brought me much joy with his antics and the things he says. This show also gives a big helping of the gay agenda, and not even in subtle ways.

Overall if you’ve been looking for something that has the fun and antics that are best achieved in animation, but also a serious enough story to really get invested, I say give The Owl House a shot.

Verdict

Definitely Watch
