A boy who attends a last resort all-boys school filled with those deemed to cause trouble, and a girl who attends the elite all-girls school next door. It seems like from the premise this is just another take on Romeo & Juliet, and so I went in not expecting too much. However, instead a solid romance story with great characters ended up becoming a highlight of the summer season.
Rintaro is tall & blonde with a mean-looking face to boot. Add a few piercings and clearly he’s a troublemaker. However, this surface-level judgment is wrong, as he’s a very nice guy who just had given up on certain things in life. Into his life walks Kaoruko, a tiny girl with a huge appetite and a bigger smile. A romance blossoms between them as they spend more time together, conquering divides between their schools and expectations, both of themselves and each other. Their friends help round things out, though we have yet to fully explore any of them in this first season but there’s enough of them to still be satisfying in some of the growth and character traits they show.
Overall if you’re looking for what’s a very pure romance show, this should be on your list. Contending against the continuation of My Dress-Up Darling and Rascal Does Not Dream, both also done by CloverWorks, this grew to be the show I looked forward to most of my romcom Saturdays. I can only hope we see more adapted.
