Finishing the first season left me overall unsure of how I feel about the show. I think up until about the halfway point, the show wasn’t really getting my attention. While the introduction of Mahito and gradual escalation going on from there was better, ultimately I was still often only half paying attention to the show. The show has some good fights for sure, but maybe I’m learning that action sequences aren’t my thing in anime. The story has potential to become very interesting, with Yuji maybe actually dying as Sukuna’s interest is clearly more with Megumi.
While initially putting the rest of the show off and expecting to not watch more for probably months, I did one Saturday morning decide to watch the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie to continue. It was very good, I’m not sure I can name a problem with it. With that I was motivated to watch season 2, which is split into two arcs: Hidden Inventory and Shibuya Incident.
Hidden Inventory is only 5 episodes, and gives us some more backstory, taking place well before season 1 and the movie. It’s less fight heavy compared to the rest of the show, so that might make it lose points for some people. However, the Shibuya Incident arc that takes up the rest of the season should take care of that, as there are multiple fights going on between different groupings of characters, and all on a larger scale than seen before. It also feels like the story really properly starts with this, as the implications of the arc are massive not just for the characters we follow, but the whole world. While season 1 only had half my attention, season 2 had it fully.
