A Flashy and Emotional Coming of Age Story for Everyone
This show had no business being this good, but man oh man is it good. Jentry Chau is an orphan teenage girl with superpowers, but she wishes she could just be normal (sounds basic but stay with me). She accidentally burned down her hometown when she was eight so her Great Aunt Gu Gu sent her to Seoul so she could learn K-Pop dances.
While learning the K-Pop dances she is attacked by my favorite guy in all of the show named Ed. That is all I will explain about Ed, you just have to watch the show to get it. During the attack by Ed, Jentry discovers she is in danger as a Mr. Cheng is after her powers and will take them by any means necessary.
Really that’s all you need to know for the purposes of the review about the main plot, and besides I’d much rather talk about the characters, writing, and ambience as it is all incredible. Jentry is a delightful rendition of a teenager, full of angst and sorrow but somehow still happy go lucky enough to make some fun friends like Michael and Kit.
Michael is her main love interest and is somehow plot relevant at the same time. He’s a high school football player who just wishes he could play the flute (no I am not kidding). While hanging out with Jentry he discovers he can see the future, but we won’t do anything with that for plot reasons…
Kit on the other hand is actually a painted demon trying to steal her chi. Yeah, normal high school things…
Anyways, they go on lots of wacky adventures along with Ed and the ghost of Gu Gu’s past to stop Cheng. Traveling through dimensions, killing demons, and burning down the town while listening to K-Pop bangers is all in hard days work for Jentry and crew.
While the plot is convoluted, it is really fun and lends itself to the overall nature of the show. There’s enough funny quips, crazy fights, and moments of emotional baggage to keep you hooked through all 13 episodes and leave you craving a renewal for season 2.
Verdict
★★★★1/2
Man what was this show? I really have no idea how to describe why this was good other than that it was an incredibly fun time and I can’t express enough how much I hope this gets a season 2.
