When Invincible first released in 2021, gory, perhaps more realistic superhero depictions were not unfamiliar, as The Boys had also made its mark by this time. Both being on Amazon’s Prime Video service they probably have some overlap, but Invincible has remained more faithful to its comic book origins and I think generally remains slightly more positive in its outlook. Now three seasons in, the show continues to deliver bloody action scenes combined with deeper character development.
We pick up in the wake of Mark’s fight with Angstrom Levy and the arrival of the Viltrumites telling him to prepare the planet. Since then Mark has been training with the GDA so he can better take on the increasingly powerful enemies. His younger half-brother Oliver has also gotten his powers now, and wants to be like Mark. Following his actions against Angstrom and still dealing with the aftermath of his fight against his father, Mark has concerns over introducing Oliver to the world of superheroes. It’s a great reminder for Mark about the path he could have fallen on and trying to avoid it with another part Viltrumite.
Mark’s mom continues to try to move on, finding comfort in Paul as she deals with now both of the children she’s raised going out to fight. Romance continues to bloom elsewhere as well, with some unexpected pairings. It’s nice to see various characters grow and not be stuck in their same old ways. That being said, a lot of the beats of the season felt very much the same, especially as the season ends in a similar way to the past two. I guess that’s part of the nature of superhero stories, but it does begin to feel a little old.
All that being said I was still quite satisfied with this season and don’t think we’ve seen a decline yet. However, if seasons continue to end on a similar note then I hope we’re going to start seeing an endgame soon.
