Fuck. I’ve honestly been dreading this review. The whole show is a total mess and an unfixable disaster but god dammit its my mess (not really but you get the idea). I’ve got to defend it at least a little bit cause while it is a barely functioning production, it’s still the guilty gear lore that I always enjoy. The first real pain point of the show is how short it is. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for variable length shows, but the problem here is that it was only 8 fucking episodes and they clearly needed more. The back half of the show just feels rushed and devoid of any character devolpment. Throw that in with a speed ran action scene to close down the main antagonist and you have my main disappointments with the show.

This is May. She is not in this show. This is not an image from this show.

Everything else was great though and firmly cemented in the Guilty Gear brand. Unika is a pretty cool addition to the cast, and I was happy to see that Sol Badguy is still doing his thing post Strive. Half the show was spent dropping overly complicated lore while characters from the game frequently popped in to say a cool line or swing their weapons about for a bit. I just wish I had more of it (and that they used that “more of it” to make it better). They didn’t have any problem nailing things for the in-game stories in Strive so I’m honestly not sure what happened. I don’t think I’m telling you anything thats not obvious here but if you are in on Guilty Gear and its story, this is at least watchable, but if not, maybe give this one a pass. You kind of have to know some backstory anyways so it would be a bit weird if someone jumped in right here.
