Gods’ Games We Play

Not exactly recommended by Christian as he only watched one episode of the anime at the time of his seasonal reviews, but he did read the light novel so that’s good enough for me. Basic premise is that gods have set up rules and games for humans to compete in, with chosen humans also receiving special abilities. Our MC Fay has an ability to never die, which is brought up exactly once in the show and I honestly don’t get it. My main complaint of the show.

As the most talented rookie of all time, Fay is tasked with taking care of a god who has decided to descend to earth in order to play with humans. Together they recruit Pearl Diamond (no really, that’s her name), whose powers revolve around teleporting; and Nel, who has legs that can both run fast and kick hard. The games generally involve some sort of trickery and wits, rather than being battles. The show is clever enough, and luckily the party we follow does not suffer from the big cringe unlike some of the side characters.

What is cringe is the fan service in this show. Pearl gets caught with her bra exposed early on in the show (twice actually), but it’s over quickly. However, we randomly get a long bath scene of Pearl and Nel comparing their bodies, and it really feels just out of place in the show. We get a similar scene towards the end of the season, and it really just disrupts the flow again. If you’re going to be horny, don’t let it ruin the pacing of your episodes.

Not too much more to say, it’s a decent show with a fun premise, but it feels incredibly incomplete. Now as I often remind people, the main point of anime is to sell something, usually source material. The good news is 1) this anime is fairly recent and 2) the light novels are still being written. That means a second season could come since the series isn’t over, assuming it did well enough to consider using it as another promotion. Without a second season, I think it’s still enjoyable, but if you’re not the light novel type you might want to hold off until there’s more to watch.
