I know, I know. But My Stepmom’s Daughter is My Ex ended up being pretty good, so I decided to give this a shot despite the title. I think this one has some real potential, but it’s just not for me. And not because of the title and what it implies. This is just much more of a drama, which also isn’t inherently the problem, but it’s also just so slow. That’s right, it’s another show killed for being slice-of-life, and after 3.5 episodes I was done.
But for some positive notes, our two leads have an interesting dynamic. Indeed, the romance is largely absent as they instead navigate how their upbringings, including their parents’ divorces, have shaped their worldview and how they interact with others. The parents, while largely absent, also have a charming realism to them in some way, with some of their kind of awkward behavior. There’s some animation choices that are also unique. Overall, there’s a foundation that could almost win me over, but the pacing just kills it for me.
