After years of movies which finished up Sakuta’s high school years, it’s time to be a university student. I feel like we’re getting a little old to be dealing with puberty syndrome at this point, but to be fair I think it’s also referred to as adolescence syndrome and I guess they are still growing up in a way.
The first arc in the season was admittedly not all that interesting, and I wondered if perhaps the show’s premise had lost some of its charm. However, the introduction of the titular Santa Claus and an overarching plot kept me interested. The next three arcs were much stronger. One complaint about the high school student arcs is that it felt like there were some repeated phenomena even if the explanation was different for each. These arcs were all much more distinct both in cause and effect.
There’s not much more to say about this season really. If you’ve watched the first season and movies prior to this (as you should), then you’re already onboard with the premise. Sakuta and Mai have grown up and matured some in a way that changes things, and some explanation for the dreaming (or lack thereof) in the title of each arc is also given, though I still don’t fully understand it. Regardless, if you’ve liked the sci-fi take on dealing with personal issues of the show or are invested in the romance aspects this has been a great addition, and I look forward to them finishing out the adaptation.
