Kowloon Generic Romance

This can be described as anything but a generic romance. Set in the walled city of Kowloon, this show ended up being a lot more interesting than I first anticipated. While there are elements I expected, such as an art style that makes the show feel a little older than it is, what is really interesting is the various mysteries. All of it ties to Kowloon, a portion of Hong Kong which in both the show and the real world was torn down in the 1990s. While it seems in the show it was rebuilt, there is more to underneath the surface.

We follow Reiko Kujirai, a woman who works at a real estate office. She helps find apartments within Kowloon for clients, alongside her coworker Kudo. She slowly begins to fall for him, while dealing with her own amnesiac struggles. That’s right, more mystery as to who Kujirai really is, as she seems to have some connection to Kudo, but it’s not immediately clear what. Could it all be tied to Generic Terra, a mysterious sci-fi object in the sky run by the Hebinuma company?

Seriously there are a lot of questions to this show, and it’s a slow burn. Every episode reveals a little while raising new questions. I very much looked forward to this every week and learning more about what’s going on, although the finale did leave me wanting a little more. Overall an unexpected but welcome surprise this season.
