I Have a Crush at Work

Many romance anime take place in high school. Maybe it’s because so many focus on your first love or it’s a bigger deal when you’re young. But there are those with an adult cast, sometimes even out in the working world rather than college to completely break from the school setting. This is one of those, focusing on a couple where each has started their career and been at it for a while. Now this missed an official release in the west, so subtitles do need a bit of work to interpret, but despite that I really liked this one.

For starters, being focused on adults already set this apart as I said. However, they manage to really capture a mature relationship. Sometimes work gets in the way of things. There can be miscommunication but you work it out. Sex is a normalized thing, though not to worry, it’s not depicted in the show. Basically this just felt like a really grounded, healthy relationship. Even the premise of hiding it at work isn’t too far-fetched, and it’s never played up for any reason.

I guess what I’m getting at is that this was a very refreshing anime compared to so many others. For those who are perhaps averse to the genre, this might be something that still works for you since it avoids many of the tropes and shortcomings of other romcom anime. Those are fans of the genre, this might not work for you if you’re not looking for a change of pace. I doubt we’re getting another season of this, but I hope it’s the first of more shows like it.
