I’m Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class

It feels a little weird having this anime so soon after Ranma 1/2 given its similar premise. In this case our leads, Akane and Saito, have already known each other for a while before their marriage is arranged, as opposed to meeting and having it arranged. This also means there’s a history of hating each other, though how much of that hate was really just hiding feelings is a question.

Now despite having this different setup of a couple that is married in high school, it does very quickly devolve to standard high school romcom tropes. Additionally we get a harem situation with Akane as the tsundere and likely to be the eventual winner (because title) and Akane’s best friend Himari. While I don’t have a general problem with love triangles or harems, this one was more annoying than anything, with some other potential contenders being thrown in but not shown as serious options in this season at least.

Another flaw with the show is it constantly feels like their progress is reset. It seems like Akane and Saito understand each other and then forget all about it within an episode or two. Things reach a low point between episodes 8 and 9 as we meet a new character. Lots of fan service and drama, all making some of the worst episodes of any romance anime I have ever seen. I nearly dropped the season here, and I only ended up getting through episode 9 by skipping through lots of it.

Reaching the end of the season, there’s nothing really redeeming. It’s mediocre at best and again no real progress has been made. I won’t be continuing this show into the future should it get more seasons.
