Dead Boy Detectives

The Dead Boy Detective agency is here to help you go from purgatory to the afterlife by resolving your unfinished business, however they couldn’t solve their own unfinished business as Netflix cancelled them after one season. Unironically, I think this being the only season of this show is the worst part about it. So much is left open ended at the end of the show that I feel like the show doesn’t have enough substance without a second season coming.

The things that make this show work are the aspects of the characters and the world of the Sandman as a whole. Whatever you think of Neil Gaiman and his situation going on right now, the man can build an interesting world to write a story in. The downside to how interesting the Sandman world is as a setting for the Dead Boy Detectives show, it ends up falling flat as there is too little we don’t know about what happens to Edwin and Charles.

Where will they go now that they’re contracted by death’s right hand? How will they solve cases with a new overseer who seems uninterested in helping them? Who is after Edwin in Hell so much so that they dragged him back at the first opportunity? Will Edwin end up finding someone? Will Charles and Crystal make it work? IS NIKO DEAD???

All of the above are questions I want answers for but I will never get the answers I crave. Really disappointed to have this sinking feeling after watching what genuinely was a fun show. I think it’s definitely worth watching but not something I would say you should be in any rush to finish since it leaves so much unanswered.

Verdict

★★★

A fun little show that really could’ve been more than it was. I think this genuinely was a casualty of both Netflix’s tendency to give up on shows after one season and the Neil Gaiman situation. There were some high moments but without a second season coming it falls a little flat for me. Worth watching if you’re looking for a show but this belongs low on your watch list.
