Let This Grieving Soul Retire

So, I may have briefly forgotten what I’m doing here. Not in some kind of cringe amnesia type way but in a “I’m just staring at the blank screen without the words that I definitely wanted to write about this show coming to me” kind of way. I think we can work through this together though. Let’s see… I think the first thing we should do is decide if the show is good. OK, it’s good, got that settled.

Now maybe I should talk about it or something? Maybe give the details that I liked while pointing out some mild flaws? Along the way I could encourage people to give it a try because I liked it so much too. I’m glad we had this talk, I think I can finally get started on writing this post.

Welcome everyone to my review of Let This Grieving Soul Retire. I liked the show a lot, you should definitely watch it, and there was nothing wrong with it. Cool all done.

Moving past that, this show was fucking funny. Much funnier than my attempt at an intro even. It’s got that running gag element to it, similar to The Eminence in Shadow or I Parry Everything, where the main character and literally every other character are completely out of touch with each other but in a slightly different way. Instead of being insanely overpowered, our main character Krai is totally worthless and just lucks his way into everyone thinking he’s a god. I may just be a sucker for this kind of humor, but I really can’t get enough of it. What anchors this show for me is the way all of the incredibly stupid misunderstandings start. Krai will start out with a simple problem that he is totally incapable of resolving and take perfectly reasonable measures to not have to deal with this problem. Then everything just grows from there into a stupider and stupider mess that’s weaved so well together to make it look like he is a genius.

This is a good example of not doing something totally new but still doing it in an enjoyable and fun enough way that the show is still worth watching. It’s not the first time I’ve seen this format of comedy (which should be obvious from the two examples I’ve listed) but I still enjoyed it because it had some unique elements, handled its jokes well, and had fun characters and story backing it up. It is possible to execute well on an established format and still make it good, you just gotta actually try. So maybe there are some gems out there in the wide world of established anime and maybe I’ll give some more stuff more of a chance. Not isekais though, those deserve all the hate I can muster for them.
