Covers: Primarily Season 7, but seasons 4-6 as well
Now season 7 had to wrap up the story after season 6 set us up for final confrontation with Aaravos. This did finally give things some focus, but now the events come together too quickly. In the finale we even get some brand new fast travel to bring our cast together for the final moments. Basically this season needed probably needed about 4 more episodes to get the right pacing, instead of not giving anything the depth it needs to feel impactful.
Claudia is a huge mess in this season. We see her finally betray Terry, but she continues to cling to an idea that she is nice. She also follows Aaravos for no clear reason, which they even almost address, but really she has just gone down the path of evil. Despite nearly killing multiple people who she considers friends throughout the season she holds on to the idea she is nice, all while continuing to act against them and the world.
The finale itself is also not a great ending. Aaravos is not fully defeated, set to return in 7 years and the finale showing some planning for that inevitability. So the main plot point isn’t entirely resolved. Indeed, a lot of the episode seems more focused on setting up more stories, rather than closing things out. While the creators said they have ideas for a third arc, I would have preferred a more definitive ending. While seasons 1-3 did have a different focus from the last 4, there was a more direct connection as Aaravos was teased in those initial seasons, and they had a chance to finish that. One thing that is also frustrating is that we barely see Aaravos use his supposedly great power, and next time around the world will be even more prepared to deal with him. So what could they possibly do to make the conflict interesting?
What started as a charming adventure that felt like it might be able to capture some of the energy Avatar had, has in my eyes seriously declined. This second arc and especially season 7 was rather disappointing, and if there is a future for the show I do not have high hopes. It would take a lot to bring me back to watching it.
