I really will never get tired of the sentence like titles some of these shows roll up with. In fairness to them we are slowly running out of unique one or two word titles, if we haven’t already, but I still don’t think that quite justifies… 14 words? I’d criticize it more for this but it honestly could be intentional. This here is your typical gag comedy anime where the main character is going about his day having completely misunderstood something about his life. In this case we have a new adventurer who thinks he is on a beginner level but is actually incredibly strong. His name is Noor.
This was one of those shows who had a formula and really stuck to it. If you think it’s pretty funny when every character on screen is having a panic attack about this super serious situation only for a big idiot with an even bigger sword to come up and literally swat it away, this will be the show for you. Fortunately for me(you? them? us?), I think that’s extremely funny. Trust me I know what you’re thinking. Surely this gets boring eventually, right? Did the guy who made a big stink about comedy shows being repetitive really just say that? Listen closely and I’ll tell ya. The trick to this one is more in how they execute the formula rather than what the formula is. Every detail of the plot is meticulously laid out to create what should be an intense and thrilling tale of sacrifice and fighting through adversity only for it to come to the same answer every time, some big dude shouting “Parry”. The lead in just gets me. I’m so into the story that it hits me with the same joke and I’m still somehow never ready for it.
The balance of high stakes content with low stakes outcomes is the bread and butter of I Parry Everything and I enjoy it enough to be six books deep in the light novel so take that as you will. Oh yeah, if the first paragraph still has you confused, you should check out my review for The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible. I talk about both of these shows at the end of that one, so I demand you consume that content as well, so I don’t have to repeat myself here. Bonus points if you can guess which one I wrote first.
One response to “I Parry Everything”
[…] do want to take a moment to appreciate this show and I Parry Everything for taking their plots at least a little bit seriously. I’m all for stupid directionless comedy […]
