I really will never get tired of the sentence like titles some of these shows roll up with. In fairness to them we are slowly running out of unique one- or two-word titles, if we haven’t already, but I still don’t think that quite justifies… 14 words? I’d criticize it more for this, but it honestly could be intentional. This here is your typical gag comedy anime where the main character is going about his day having completely misunderstood something about his life. In this case we have a new adventurer who thinks he is on a beginner level but is actually incredibly strong. His name is Noor. What? His name is Rick? Oh shit, there were two of these this season? I must have gotten my notes mixed up. All right, so his name is Rick and the key factor in identifying him amongst his “buff guy that thinks he is weak but is strong” peers is his advanced age of 32.
As someone who very recently heard the phrase “it’s all downhill after 25”, I was fucking eating up this show’s most prevalent running joke about that typical anime trope of anyone over 30 being basically on their way out. This is why I’m giving them enough credit to say that the title could be part of the joke. The humor that came as a side dish to the typical dumb funny stuff was so self-aware and played into itself super well. The show believed in its story and leaned on the plot like it was a serious thing to care about and then used it to set up these moments that were somehow the most exciting bro action scenes while also eliciting no shortage of laughter about how stupid everything going on was. So yeah, in short, this was some good shit.
I do want to take a moment to appreciate this show and I Parry Everything for taking their plots at least a little bit seriously. I’m all for stupid directionless comedy but, as I mentioned in a certain deer focused review, you really do need some plot to hang on to sometimes when the laughs don’t quite land. Both of these shows had fun stories and cool over the top action scenes that I enjoyed just as much as their comedic efforts. Sure, you can debate how good the stories are one their own or how much it would fall apart without the goofy laughy feel, but I think the whole combined story plus comedy experience is a strong one. Also turns out to be a pretty good combination for a fantasy setting, I guess.
