Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feeling in Russian

Ah, one of the oh so many romcoms this season. I swear there are normally like one or two that show up every other season but for whatever reason they really piled them on this summer. There has to be at least five. I’m sure of it. I’m definitely going to get a full count by the time I reach the end of these reviews. Particularly astute readers may have noticed by this point that I’m rambling about unrelated things too much in this review. Those of you who really know what they’re doing here may have also realized that it’s because I have so little to say about this show. Look, it’s a good show with a cute concept but that’s about all I can give it. The laughs are there but not memorable, the characters are there but not memorable, the story certainly tries to be there. It’s just not a standout for me. I still enjoyed watching it and made it through the whole season but, if you had to choose one romcom to watch this season and you would be targeted by a society of professional assassins if you watched a second, this one probably isn’t it.

One last thing about this show, what the fuck is up with the whole Russian girl stereotype they’re rolling with here? I could totally be imagining this, but I feel like every time there is a Russian character in an anime it’s a coin flip between two character types, both of which are represented in this show. It’s always the same too, right down to the white hair. I don’t know, maybe it’s nothing. Though I still want to know if there are even that many Russians living in Japan. Amusingly, if there aren’t, that would take this show’s plot from “trying it’s best to exist” tier all the way to “some stupid fucking shit”.
