This is the rare visual novel adaptation, something I only learned because aniplex.exe is credited. Now I’ve already forgotten a lot about the main character’s backstory and barely remembered his name is Natsuki, so that’s not a promising sign given this anime finished just a day before I’m writing this review. However, let’s talk a bit more about the show.
Basically the world experienced a sudden sea level rise which caused all sorts of chaos and destruction. Despite this kind of apocalyptic setting the anime gives off big summer vibes with a bright color palette, and plenty of water. Natsuki discovers Atri, a humanoid robot, while trying to find something at his grandma’s house that might make him rich. Through Atri and childhood friend Minamo, he finds new purpose in life. We meet a few other characters, and there’s plenty of drama to be had to as we learn more about Atri. The sci-fi here is very light, don’t expect it to be based in anything or for any of it to really be explained. The story is overall decent, and I didn’t notice any major pacing issues or things that felt like they were skipped to make the show fit the allotted time.
I’ll say the romance here is awkward at best and absolute cringe at worst. This is not the first or only story about can humans fall in love with robots or vice versa, but in this case Atri also looks like a child. The only redemption here is that romantic moments are barely in the show, though given this is intended to be a romance anime maybe that’s also a downside.
While the anime was good on average, I think the finale totally missed. For all of the drama that’s happened over the show, it’s simply too rushed. We don’t really get much of anything on many of the characters we’ve met. Actually, we don’t get much of a resolution to a lot of things, part of this having to do with the fact that the sci-fi is not there as an actual element but more just there to make parts of the story happen. If it weren’t for the finale, this show may have passed, if only barely, but with the lack of a satisfying payoff the show as a whole is a miss.
