To be honest, I’m a good bit late to writing this review. As usual, I dragged my feet and a month or so has gone by since I finished the second season of this show. But a month isn’t that long, and I think it’s pretty telling that I can barely recall what happened even though I diligently hate watched all 12 episodes. As before (well I assume I said this for season 1 anyways, I can’t be bothered to check), I’ll give this show credit for having really well animated action scenes that were genuinely entertaining to watch but in every other aspect it was somehow worse than the first season.
I’m going to avoid harping on about the issues I already had with the show like the whole hair color thing and the terrible plot and focus on how it really nosedived this season. You know, on the off chance anyone who actually likes the show is reading this and wants to be told they should give up on it. The story of Wistoria was never great but it was always progressing in the first season. An obstacle would be presented for Will and, through his sword swinging efforts, he would overcome it and move towards a clear goal. A rather steady and consistent push forward that at least made room for plenty of cool action scenes. Season two was more of a seesaw like flow. We’d take a step back, then Will would get some bullshit anime power up and move forward. But that didn’t really matter cause some reason to move back would come in out of nowhere. It was exhausting. I know I screamed out loud “Why! This is all pointless” several times. By the end of the season, it felt like the plot barely advanced. Now, I’m of the belief that all the bullshit significantly detracts from the fun action stuff, but there was a pretty flashy fight at the end that was pretty cool so that’s an 8/10 show for some people.
Side note; there was this one supporting character that was killed off really early this season before his background or motives were ever really explained. I’d like to believe that the author just didn’t really have a plan for him and randomly gave him the axe, so he didn’t have to figure one out.
