A Familiar World, A Complete Story.
If you haven’t read my review of the first movie, this is your reminder to read that first!
Interestingly, everything I loved about Wicked is gone in this movie, yet I think I may have enjoyed this more. While I fully understand why people were disappointed by the sequel, it actually had a more complete story. The first part felt like it never quite found the plot until Defying Gravity, Wicked: For Good had the whole plot wrapped up in a neat little bow.
I’m not going to pretend like this story is a masterpiece of writing, but it actually capitalized on many of the threads from part 1. From what I understand, this half of the story had some new scenes from the musical (I have no idea what scenes they are) which is of course blasphemy, but as a new viewer I felt it was a very succinct story.
Some of the things I liked:
- Glinda and Elphaba both had important roles to play.
- Seeing the behind the scenes of the original Wizard of Oz movie was cool.
- The songs were fine albeit not as good as the first movies’ songs.
- The finale was heartwarming and gave everyone a wrapped up ending that I could accept.
Some of the things I disliked:
- Fiyero scenes were not as relevant as they were in the first movie.
- Not enough scenes with the Wizard.
- The movie does feel a bit long.
I feel really weird saying that I liked this movie as much aspart 1 (maybe even more), but I think I did. The best way I can describe it is Wicked is a good musical, Wicked: For Good is a good movie if that makes sense… I don’t really know where I’m going with this, go watch the movie and let me know if you agree or disagree with me.
Verdict
★★★1/2
Wicked: For Good has become one of those movies that I like but cannot tell you why. I really don’t know how to rate this movie at all. The only thing I can say for certain is that I felt this had a very complete story which was lacking in the first movie for me.
